How did we do it?
In September 2024 we conducted research with two groups; one supporting young people, the other veterans. Through social media and outreach channels we invited people to complete a brief, anonymous survey to capture background details plus eight questions on trauma, existing services, and perceived impact. After the survey each participant joined a short conversation about Ignis Lodge, our planned campus and upcoming programmes. They then answered three follow-up questions on whether Ignis Lodge could meet local needs. Responses were recorded electronically and remained anonymous.
All fieldwork was conducted virtually. Participants read an information sheet and provided recorded e-consent. A distress protocol was available and participants could withdraw at any time.
All activities followed UKRI’s Good Research Practice policy and the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, and participants could opt to share their story for our narrated series. Findings reflect people already engaged with services. Unmet need in hidden populations may be higher.

Who were they?
We surveyed 187 people who have recently experienced crisis.
- 75 (40%) were aged 18–25
- 65 (35%) were veterans
- 49 (26%) were care-leavers
-
All had recently completed; were receiving; or waiting to receive; mental health intervention or treatment.
(Figures may exceed 100% because some participants met more than one criterion. Percentages are individually rounded to whole numbers.)

Moving forward
- 38 (20%) were classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and had no current pathway into work or study.
- 59 (32%) could not see a future where they were not receiving regular intervention.
- 86 (46%) were on a waiting list for support with their mental health.
- 102 (55%) had considered or taken steps to self-harm or end their life in the past six months.

Could Ignis Lodge help?
- 155 (83%) feel that an organisation such as Ignis Lodge would make a positive difference.
- 135 (72%) feel it could help right now.
- 165 (88%) feel their outcome would be or would have been better were Ignis Lodge available.
